A-to-B races, challenges and leaderboards: how to compete without taking risks

By the TripRank team · 25 October 2026 · 7 min read

Competition makes habits stick. It is why people run more when a friend is watching the same app. Driving is different, because the wrong kind of competition is dangerous. TripRank is built so that smooth, legal driving is what wins. This guide explains each competitive feature and how it keeps you safe.

The golden rule

Obey the law and drive for the conditions. No race, score or rank is worth a risk. TripRank's terms say so, and the features below are designed around it.

Leaderboards that reward consistency

TripRank has boards for distance, score, trips and top speed, worldwide, among friends, and inside crews. A few design choices keep them honest and safe:

  • The score board uses your average score, so one reckless burst does not win it.
  • A monthly season resets the board so a new driver can win, not just the one with the most distance.
  • Impossible speeds and flights are filtered out of every ranking automatically.

A-to-B races

An A-to-B race is a start, a finish, and a time window. You create a race, share the link, and each driver drives the route on their own with tracking on. When the tracked drive goes from the start to the finish, your time is recorded for you. Nobody drives side by side; the clock does the comparing.

  • Automatic timing: no one types in a time.
  • Events: set an open and close time, like a Sunday morning sprint.
  • Live standings: see where you are and be told when someone takes your lead.

A better way to win a race is to be consistent and plan well: pick your timing, avoid traffic, stay smooth. Pair it with the habits in the driving score guide.

Challenges

Turn any drive into a challenge and share it. Others drive the same road and try to beat your score. Because it is based on score rather than time alone, the fastest driver is not automatically the winner.

Crews for friends, family and offices

A crew is a private group with its own leaderboard. It is the easiest way to get a few people comparing scores and weekly recaps without the noise of a global board. Invite colleagues for a commute league, or keep it to the family.

Safe-competition checklist

  • Set the trip up before you move; never use the phone while driving.
  • Pick races that fit your usual roads and traffic.
  • Treat your score as the goal, not your top speed.
  • Skip any event on a day you are tired, late or in bad weather.
  • If a friend pushes you to speed, decline. It will not count.
